Maya Culture in Highland Chiapas
Welcome to Cielo y Tierra Tours. We are a small, family-owned tour operator based in the beautiful highland colonial town of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Mexico.
All our cultural day tours through the Maya highlands of Chiapas are led by Alex Aranda, a highly-experienced bilingual tour guide who lives and works in San Cristóbal.
Over the years Alex has developed a deep appreciation of Maya culture, both past and present-day. In 1990, he co-founded with Raul Garcia Alex and Raul Tours, specializing in cultural day trips through Chiapas. Their tours to the Maya villages of Chamula and Zinacantán became one of the most widely recommended excursions in the area (including recommendations by all major guide books, such as Lonely Planet and Frommer's).

In 2007, Alex decided he wanted to take his exploration further, and he set up Cielo y Tierra Tours so that he could offer cultural excursions to some of the other incredible, vibrant Maya communities in the highlands of Chiapas. In contrast to Chamula and Zinacantán, these villages receive very little tourism and it gives Alex a chance to share a fascinating world that few other travellers get to see.
Alex likes to work with small groups so that he can visit the villages in a respectful, non-intrusive way. And, just as importantly, so that he can offer a personal, friendly service to those travelling with him.
